Georgina Gibbons - BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2013

More than 1400 artworks were entered into this year’s competition with a wide array of subjects, media and styles. The category winners can all be seen in the BBC Wildlife Magazine September issue and on the magazine’s website. My winning painting was exhibited at the prestigious Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London in Nov 2013.

BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2013

2013

Category winner “Beneath the Water” and overall BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year winner with pastel painting “Dangerous Waters”

The judges said: “This outstanding piece of work fulfils all the requirements to be the overall winner of this competition. A beautiful and sympathetic study of these amazing creatures, it presents the perfect balance of technical skill and atmosphere. Many congratulations - its triumph is well deserved.”

I am so pleased that this painting won the title as it takes me right back to my roots. Lion fish were the first wildlife species that captivated me when I was only about 11 - menacing yet beautiful. As a teenager I went as often as possible to the small aquarium on Poole Quay to see them. Over the years I forgot about them - until 2012 when I saw them again at the London Aquarium and I knew that I had to paint them.

2012

Finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year Endangered Species category with pastel painting “Clinging On”

I adore this image of the baby orang-utan entitled “Clinging On”. Clinging on to mum, just as the species is clinging on to its existence in the wild in Borneo and Sumatra.

A really poignant image that is still probably my favourite painting.

Please support orang-utan rescue and preservation organisations if you can and avoid buying products that use palm oil which is the cause of the destruction of their forest habitat.

2011

Finalist in the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year British Birds category with pastel painting “Preening”

I love painting birds and find each feather to be like an individual work of art. The reference photos I took of a mallard duck preening show off his feathers beautifully.
