Step 1: the image is sketched onto a pale grey velour paper.
Step 2: I draw in the black areas and then start blocking in other large areas of
colour.
Step 2 continued: the base colours are quite strong and these will give depth and
tone to the subsequent layers that are applied.
Already the fur texture has started to emerge. Brush strokes should always be in
the direction of the fur and according to the length of the fur.
Step 3: I start to work on the surrounding areas. In this picture I have chosen not
to have a full background but something is still needed in the foreground to anchor
the tiger to the ground.
Step 4: I am keeping the foreground minimal and apply more shadow where the tiger
meets the ground.

Step 5: several layers of pastel are applied to add detail and form to the tiger.
Step 6: fine details, such as individual hairs and highlights, are added to created
the finished work.
